Franco Baresi, former captain of Italy and AC Milan, has died aged 66. In 2022 he reflected on his career, focusing on his return for the 1994 World Cup final only weeks after an operation.

According to L'Équipe, he was in Paris in October 2022 to present his autobiography "Libre de rêver", published by Slatkine, and discussed the key moments of his playing life in an interview.

He featured in the final against Brazil on 17 July, a match that finished 0-0.

Italy were then beaten 2-3 on penalties.

That campaign, framed by a swift comeback for the showpiece, became a defining chapter of his story.
