Frank Lampard says Wrexham’s meteoric rise deserves acclaim as the Dragons aim to follow Coventry into the Premier League.

On Sunday, Wrexham visit the Sky Blues, who have already sealed the Championship title to secure a top-flight return for the first time in 25 years. Phil Parkinson’s team are sixth ahead of Saturday’s games, their play-off fate in their own hands as they chase a fourth straight promotion. Coventry chairman Doug King said: "Everybody is going to get linked with everything, it's a merry-go-round." He was speaking to the BBC.

Lampard has aligned himself with those applauding Wrexham’s progress under Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, noting worldwide interest. He expressed respect for Wrexham’s off-field and on-pitch progress, calling it a positive story that should be championed, and highlighted the owners’ passion and investment behind this season’s Championship push.

Earlier in the campaign, before Wrexham’s 3-2 win over the Sky Blues, he recalled a Swansea loan meeting with Wrexham and said he gave away a penalty. He added the stadium and team have changed markedly since then.

Lampard’s success with Coventry has seen him linked with a return to Chelsea, where he has previously held permanent and interim roles, after Liam Rosenior’s sacking following only three months in charge.

"You can see how emotionally connected [Lampard] is with the city, you can see what it meant to him to get promotion and then the title and I think he’s found a happy place at the moment."
