The Sky Blues have been the standout team in the Championship this season and have occupied the summit for a large part of the campaign, with promotion to the big time now almost a formality.

Coventry’s routine 3-0 victory away at Swansea City heading into the international break puts them on 80 points from 39 outings, nine clear of Middlesbrough in the race for the title and 11 clear ahead of third-placed Ipswich Town to seal automatic promotion.

It would be Lampard’s first promotion on his CV and a statement of intent about the progress of his managerial journey, particularly when it was dented after underwhelming spells at both Everton and Chelsea.

But now, some appear to be in favour of handing the Blues legend a route back to Stamford Bridge, particularly when boss Liam Rosenior is under increasing pressure so soon after stepping into the hotseat.

Chelsea and Rosenior have been blasted for under-par performances and results in recent weeks, winning just one of their last six top-flight games and being dumped out the Champions League in embarrassing fashion by French champions Paris Saint Germain – losing by an aggregate score of 8-2.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s poor run of domestic form sees them meandering in sixth place, with the gap to the top four extending to six points after Aston Villa secured a 2-0 victory over relegation-threatened West Ham.

It’s a tricky period that the former Hull City chief is going through, while the Chelsea hierarchy have shown that they are not always the most patient with managers who can’t make an instant impact.

Therefore, Lampard’s name is entering the frame once again if the post becomes vacant, with former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt backing the 47-year-old to be a major success at Stamford Bridge, speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast.

It will be painful reading for Coventry supporters though, who will hope the club can do everything in their power to keep him in charge during their expected return to the big time.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast and reported by The Mirror, ex-Manchester United midfielder and current co-owner of Salford City Nicky Butt has suggested Chelsea should be looking to lure Frank Lampard away from Coventry City to replace Liam Rosenior, believing he has earned the right to have another crack at the job following his heroics in the Championship this term.

Butt said: "Do you think if Frank Lampard gets promotion with Coventry, they could go back in for Frank?

"He got the job too early the first time, I think, and he had the transfer embargo, so he had to use a lot of young players.

"It wouldn’t be a stupid thing to go and get Frank Lampard back in charge of Chelsea for me. He’s done a great job at Coventry.

"He’s got a bit more experience now, and he probably made a few mistakes the first time around. People need to understand that a transfer embargo means you have to rely on loads of young players, that must have been difficult for him.

"He would be a totally different manager now. I think Lampard would find it easier working with better players, it would be easier for him to get his messages across to more technical players.

"If Frank went back into Chelsea, with all the experience he’s got now, I think he would do an amazing job, I really do."

Coventry City would find it difficult to hold on to Frank Lampard if Chelsea come calling

The nature of football is always so cruel. Whenever a side has success, there’s always a bigger club waiting in the wings to poach a certain player or manager to benefit them instead.

And it could be what happens to Coventry if they seal their place back in the Premier League, with Frank Lampard doing such a fabulous job to get the Sky Blues on the cusp of playing top-flight football for the first time since 2001.

Whether the 47-year-old deserves such a big opportunity back at Chelsea yet is another matter, as you do feel he would need to first prove himself back in the big time with an underdog team to show he has what it takes to manage one of England’s biggest ever clubs.

If the offer did come, it would be very difficult to see Lampard turn it down, with such a chance to get back onto the biggest of managerial stages not coming around all too often.

Doug King and Coventry would have to pull out all the financial stops that promotion brings to help keep Lampard at the CBS Arena, with the Sky Blues' chances of relegation drastically increasing without him at the helm.
