Heidenheim are still alive in Bundesliga after scoring three goals away from home in back-to-back games. While they have conceded a late equalizer against champions FC Bayern, Frank Schmidt’s side held on for a 3-1 win on Sunday against Köln.
"The signs were clear to us that we had to win today to have any chance of reaching the relegation playoff spot on matchday 34,” said the coach after the game. “It was a back-and-forth game until half-time, also in terms of chances. I thought we were better in the second half because we had several promising counter-attacking opportunities.”
Heidenheim are now level on points with Wolfsburg and St. Pauli before next week’s finale. The two teams will lock horns at Millerntor, while Heidenheim host Mainz in front of their supporters. Heidenheim need to win by a big margin if Wolfsburg win away from home or St. Pauli record a heavy victory.
“I think my team believed in themselves and radiated that belief against an opponent who really made it difficult for us. We had to stay highly focused until the very end. If we manage to win here, then we'll be fired up for the season finale. Nothing will be given to us, and we don't want that! We believe that we can achieve 16th place in the end.” concluded the long-serving coach.
