With Heidenheim seemingly destined for relegation and a return to the 2. Bundesliga at the end of just their third campaign in Germany’s top flight, increasing attention has been placed on the future of long-serving coach Frank Schmidt should the club go down.
Heading into the weekend, Heidenheim sit bottom of the table on 14 points - already 11 adrift of safety - a gap that appears increasingly insurmountable at this stage of the season. However, Schmidt moved swiftly to silence speculation surrounding his position during Friday’s press conference.
“I don’t like it when such things are left hanging in the air, and I think it’s time to send a clear signal,” Schmidt said ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Bayer Leverkusen. “I can say here and now that I will fulfill my contract and stay with FCH.”
It is an indisputable statement of commitment - one that will be warmly received by both supporters and the club’s hierarchy.
Schmidt, who has been in charge since 2007, is approaching two decades at the helm - an extraordinary tenure in modern football. Despite the current struggles, the 52-year-old remains fully committed to the project.
“I’ve never said I’m quitting, but of course a situation like this affects you,” he added. “But you can rely on me - I will remain coach in Heidenheim and fulfil my contract.”
With relegation looming, the focus is already beginning to shift towards a potential rebuild and an immediate push for promotion. Schmidt made clear that the motivation to restore success remains strong.
“I want to have success again, and the idea of coming through the next year and tackling it together is what drives me.”
