Fans visiting Bayern Munich's iconic Allianz Arena will now cross Franz-Beckenbauer-Platz 5 before matches, in a tribute to the late Franz 'Der Kaiser' Beckenbauer, who died on 7 January 2024, aged 78.
Beckenbauer shaped German football like no other player. As well as winning the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship with Germany, he was a key part of the famous Bayern side that lifted four Bundesliga titles and three European Cups. 'Der Kaiser' lifted another Meisterschale while at Hamburg, before masterminding World Cup and Bundesliga success as a coach.
The new sign for Franz-Beckenbauer-Platz was officially unveiled at a ceremony on 5 May. Heidi and son Joel Beckenbauer, senior Bayern management figures and former players, including Lothar Matthäus, were among the 80 guests.
"We are opening Franz-Beckenbauer-Platz 5 in reference to his legendary shirt number - on 5 May 2025," Bayern president Herbert Hainer said at the unveiling. "As always, everything fits together to form a coherent whole, even the smallest detail. The 5th of May is a date like Franz himself: it stands out, stays in the mind - and stands for the lightness of spring, of new beginnings, of life. The perfect Franz Beckenbauer day!"
Munich Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter added: "No matter what role he fulfilled, Franz Beckenbauer was always one of us. The memory of Franz Beckenbauer is alive worldwide, here it is at the centre of football events. Dahoam in Munich and at the arena. He would like that."
In a further tribute, Bayern are planning to erect a statue of Beckenbauer next to the one of club record goalscorer Gerd Müller, which stands proudly in front of the Allianz Arena. The German Supercup will also be known as the 'Franz Beckenbauer Supercup', beginning later this year.
Bayern fans will descend on Franz-Beckenbauer-Platz 5 on Matchday 33, when the record champions host old rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach in their first game since being crowned 2024/25 and 33-time Bundesliga winners.
