Freiburg have lodged an enquiry for Wilfried Gnonto, signalling summer attention on Leeds United’s fringes. The 22-year-old has endured limited league starts this season and has often been used as an impact option.

According to Leeds Live, Freiburg are the first known club to ask about Gnonto, who has two years left on his contract. Leeds would drive a hard bargain and are unlikely to seek his exit, though any move could come from his camp.

Nearly three years after his August 2023 transfer request, when he refused to play while pushing for Everton before apologising and being reintegrated, his future is again a talking point.

He started the opening-night win against Everton but has three further league starts, none since November. Each of his last 16 league outings has been from the bench, and he has completed 90 minutes only once, at Norwich in the FA Cup fourth round.

December brought admission that the situation was not easy, although he had just assisted Dominic Calvert-Lewin in a 1-1 draw at Brentford after winning a penalty that sparked the 3-3 comeback against Liverpool. He also scored against Derby and converted in the West Ham shoot-out, but did not start the semi-final.

A calf problem and then a hernia operation sidelined him for seven matches, and a shift to wing-backs has further squeezed minutes. He filled in at right wing-back against Brighton, heading away a stoppage-time cross. Whether Freiburg, Europa League finalists, appeals is unclear, and further suitors are likely.
