Times Square turned into a vast fan zone on Monday night, jubilant scenes later giving way to clashes that required a police response.

According to L'Équipe, hundreds of Argentina fans were first on the scene, even though their team face Algeria in Kansas City in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday (three heures HF).

They were then joined by large numbers of Algerian supporters. French fans followed from seven thirty pm local time, answering a call from Les irréductibles Français.

The three groups took turns to sing. Senegalese, Scottish and Brazilian supporters also gathered, curious and happy to share the moment.

The French contingent was notably family friendly and noisy, with many young people. Chants included "Qui ne saute pas n'est pas français", "La Marseillaise" and "Pena Baiona". Sports minister Marina Ferrari took part.

The gathering was ultimately spoiled by confrontations between some Algerian and Argentine supporters, prompting police to intervene.
