Gakpo Faces Fresh Netherlands Challenge as World Cup Competition Intensifies

Cody Gakpo heads into the 2026 World Cup with questions swirling around his place in the Netherlands attack after an underwhelming display in a surprise defeat to Algeria.

What should have been a routine send-off before the tournament instead became an uncomfortable evening for Ronald Koeman’s side in Rotterdam. The Netherlands fell to a 1-0 defeat, and while several established names struggled to make an impact, it was Gakpo’s performance that attracted particular scrutiny.

According to the original source, Liverpool Echo, the Liverpool forward completed 81 minutes on the left flank but failed to stamp his authority on the contest. More significantly, another winger seized the spotlight and may have altered the pecking order ahead of the World Cup.

World Cup Pressure Mounts for Gakpo

International tournaments have a habit of accelerating careers and reshaping squads. One strong performance can transform a player’s standing, while a difficult night can open the door for a rival.

That appears to be the situation facing Gakpo.

The Netherlands entered the friendly with a front three featuring Donyell Malen through the middle, Gakpo operating from the left and Crysencio Summerville on the opposite flank. While the established names struggled to find rhythm against a disciplined Algeria side, Summerville delivered the sort of energetic display that catches the eye of coaches and supporters alike.

For Gakpo, the timing is far from ideal. The forward endured a challenging club season and would have hoped to use the World Cup build-up as an opportunity to regain momentum. Instead, fresh competition has emerged at precisely the wrong moment.

Netherlands Rivals Making Strong Cases

Dutch media were notably more impressed by Summerville than Gakpo.

VoetbalPrimeur awarded Gakpo a rating of 5.5 out of 10 and wrote: “Gakpo quickly weaved his way past his direct opponent a few times. After that, the left winger was unable to really make his mark.”

By contrast, Summerville received one of the highest ratings among the Dutch players. The publication awarded him 7 out of 10 and praised his contribution, saying: “A fine debut from Summerville. The West Ham forward made a fresh impression and was involved in many of the Dutch threats. His agility and speed are a weapon.”

Those assessments reflected what unfolded on the pitch. Summerville looked fearless in possession, stretched the Algeria defence and consistently provided an outlet whenever the Netherlands attempted to build attacks.

His performance also earned praise from NOS, which highlighted his effectiveness despite operating on the right wing rather than his usual position on the left.

The report stated: “Overall, Summerville proved he can be dangerous with his speed and dribbling and can also hold the ball well on the inside as an extra midfielder.”

Battle for Left-Flank Minutes

What makes the situation particularly interesting is that Summerville’s natural position mirrors Gakpo’s preferred role.

Although deployed on opposite wings against Algeria, both players are most comfortable attacking from the left. That creates a direct competition that could become one of the defining selection stories of the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign.

Koeman has long trusted Gakpo. The Liverpool attacker has delivered important goals for his country and possesses valuable tournament experience. Those qualities should not be overlooked after one disappointing outing.

Yet international football can be ruthless. Coaches are often forced to reward form rather than reputation, especially during major tournaments where every match carries enormous significance.

If Summerville continues to perform at the same level shown on his debut, he will strengthen his claim for increased involvement. Whether that comes as a starter or as an impact substitute remains to be seen, but his emergence gives Koeman another attacking option.

Opportunity Remains in Gakpo’s Hands

For Gakpo, the response now becomes crucial.

Elite players are rarely judged on a single performance. They are judged on how they react when challenged. The World Cup presents the perfect stage for a swift response, and the Netherlands will still look towards experienced figures to lead their campaign.

Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch remain key members of the Dutch squad, while Gakpo’s track record at international level ensures he retains significant credit in the bank.

Nevertheless, Algeria exposed a reality that exists within every ambitious national team. Places are never guaranteed.

As the World Cup approaches, Gakpo finds himself in a battle he may not have expected a few weeks ago. The Netherlands have discovered another exciting attacking option, and competition for places has intensified.

That is good news for the Netherlands. For Gakpo, it is a challenge that demands an immediate answer.
