Huddersfield Town's transfer stance on Joe Taylor this summer has been revealed

Huddersfield Town striker Joe Taylor looks set to be a wanted man this summer, following an excellent loan spell at Wigan Athletic in the second half of last season.

The Welshman was signed by the Terriers in early January 2025 for a fee reported to be in the region of £3m, also penning a four-and-a-half year contract with the Yorkshire club.

However, it'd be more than fair to say Town haven't got their money's worth, as Taylor scored just six goals in 34 league outings, which saw him fall down the pecking order, opening the door for a temporary exit in January.

Taylor moved to Wigan for the rest of the 2025/26 campaign, and this would prove to be a stroke of genius, as he recaptured his goalscoring form with the Latics, netting 11 goals in 21 league games.

This has seen the 23-year-old catch the eye of Championship clubs ahead of the new season, despite his struggles at Huddersfield, who will reportedly be looking to recoup what they spent on him, should his permanent exit be sanctioned.

Taylor's current situation is rather bizarre, as he's attracting interest from Championship clubs, but his current club in League One aren't particularly desperate to keep hold of him.

Now, a fresh update on Huddersfield's stance has been provided by journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon Page, which may come as a blow to any of the striker's potential suitors.

According to Nixon, the Terriers are still willing to sanction Taylor's permanent exit this summer under their new head coach, but they will only do so if they can recoup the £3m they splashed out on him 18 months ago.

Huddersfield appointed Martin Drury as their new permanent boss after his interim spell, in which he didn't get the chance to assess Taylor, as he was already on loan at Wigan.

Despite this, the Yorkshire-based side is reportedly still happy to let the 15-goal ace depart the club on a permanent basis, should the right offer come in.

Nixon also reported that Taylor's former loan club, Wigan, were keen on bringing him back to the Brick Community Stadium, but they're unable to afford the deal.

£3m Joe Taylor price tag may put off potential suitors

Regardless of Taylor's excellent loan spell at Wigan, the price Huddersfield are asking for their out-of-favour forward may be off-putting for some buyers.

Taylor's spell at Town was an outlier in his career, having previously succeeded at Colchester United and Lincoln City on loan, before recapturing his goalscoring form with the Latics.

At 23, the striker still has plenty of room to grow, and his goalscoring record in the lower leagues is indicative of someone who is capable of making the step-up to the Championship.

However, Taylor's tumultuous Huddersfield stint will serve as food for thought for any interested clubs, particularly with how steep the price tag on his head is this summer.

The Terriers won't want to be losing big money on the Welshman, but they may find it hard to find a buyer with the figure they're reportedly set to quote.
