Manchester United will reportedly hold ‘fresh talks this week’ via intermediaries for Elliot Anderson, according to UtdDistrict.

It comes amid stern competition from Manchester City, who, judging by recent speculation, are currently the favourites in the race for the Nottingham Forest ace.

Elliot Anderson: The state of play

One factor that will undoubtedly go in City’s favour is that they can not only meet any price tag Forest set, but they can also grant Anderson his desired wages, which will likely be a major improvement on what he’s currently pocketing in the Midlands.

That won’t deter United from going toe-to-toe, though.

The 23-year-old is poised to be on the move this summer following two seasons with Forest. Should the club be relegated, it’s as good as a certainty.

United have identified Anderson as their first-choice midfield target as they prepare for the departure of Casemiro, who will leave as a free agent at the end of June.

They have also shortlisted the likes of Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba and Sandro Tonali, but it’s pretty common knowledge now that Anderson trumps the rest of them in INEOS’ estimations.

He could, however, prove to be the most expensive, with Forest believed to value him in the region of £100 million – two years after they shelled out £35m to sign him from Newcastle United.

Transfer speculation will be last thing on Anderson’s mind when the league resumes

In the meantime, Anderson’s suitors can make their pitches and proposals, but they will likely have to wait until England’s World Cup campaign finishes to really knuckle down and get a deal over the line.

The Newcastle graduate’s sole focus from now until May is keeping Forest in the top flight, after which he will be hoping to play an integral role for the Three Lions in their first tournament under Thomas Tuchel.
