At this time of year, Roma tends to be looking for sporting directors or coaches.
This season is no exception. Gasperini’s position is solid, following the club’s statement dismissing Ranieri and placing him at the center of the project, but Frederic Massara is on the verge of leaving.
The Giallorossi sporting director, still active, is expected to leave the capital in the coming days.
The casting call to replace the former AC Milan director appears to have narrowed down to two names: Manna and D’Amico.
Both, however, are under contract with Napoli and Atalanta.
This is a significant detail. Currently in pole position is the current Napoli sporting director, who has a three-year agreement with De Laurentiis (2029).
Discussions between Roma and Manna have been positive, and the director is flattered by the club’s offer.
As Il Tempo reports, the sporting director currently earns €350,000 net at Napoli, and the Friedkins are willing to guarantee him triple that.
The club’s owners have been positively impressed by Manna’s profile, but there’s a major but: Napoli, and therefore president Aurelio De Laurentiis, are not accustomed to letting competing clubs snatch coaches or sporting directors.
The Friedkins, after securing the sporting director’s approval, are expected to meet with the Napoli owner.
There are two possible scenarios: De Laurentiis requests financial compensation from Roma or proposes a raise to Giovanni Manna.
The risk for the Giallorossi is that, despite positive feedback from Napoli’s current sporting director, they cannot reach an agreement to reach a definitive handshake. At that point, the club would be forced to pursue other options.
