The health scare for Fiorentina’s Edoardo Bove against Inter Milan was not the first shock collapse by a footballer on the pitch.

Today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, highlight the history of similar incidents, including recent ones with Christian Eriksen and Evan Ndicka.

Fiorentina midfielder Bove collapsed and lost consciousness during yesterday’s Serie A match against Inter at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Bove is now reportedly in stable condition after recovering.

However, it was an emotionally harrowing scene at the Franchi after Bove initially lost consciousness.

It was not the first time something like this has happened, however.

Fiorentina legend Giancarlo Antognoni had lost consciousness and went into a coma after a collision with Genoa keeper Silvano Martina in a Serie A clash in 1981.

Antognoni’s pulse had stopped. He took two days before regaining consciousness from his coma.

Lionello Manfredonia, similarly, suffered a heart attack on the pitch while playing for Roma in 1989.

More recently, midfielder Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch in 2021.

Eriksen was an Inter player at the time. However, he was playing for Denmark at the Euros, in a match against Finland.

Eriksen made a recovery, and was given a cardiac implant.

However, regulations in Italy do not allow players with such implants to participate in sporting competitions for safety reasons.

Therefore, Eriksen returned to the Premier League, where he’d played for Tottenham Hotspur, subsequently featuring for Brentford and Manchester United.

Meanwhile, back in Serie A, last season there was a collapse on the pitch for Roma defender Evan Ndicka.

That happened towards the end of a match between the Giallorossi and Udinese.

In that case, like with yesterday’s Serie A match between Fiorentina and Inter, the match was suspended and then postponed due to the health emergency.
