Anthony Gordon is the latest to have done so, after completing his transfer from Newcastle United to Barcelona in one of the surprise deals of the summer.

Barcelona's move for Gordon accelerated at pace, as the Spanish champions beat competition from thePremier League and Bayern Munich to land the winger.

5. Tammy Abraham - Chelsea to AS Roma (£34m)

Chelsea have made a fortunes from selling academy products in recent seasons, including the £34m sale of Tammy Abraham in 2021. The forward broke into the Chelsea team under Frank Lampard, before falling out of favour following Thomas Tuchel's arrival.

Despite consecutive campaigns as Chelsea's top scorer, Abraham left for Roma for a £34m fee. He scored 27 goals during an impressive debut campaign that ended in Europa Conference League success, before injuries impacted his time in Italy.

After loan spells at AC Milan and Besiktas, Abraham returned to the Premier League with Aston Villa in 2026.

4. Conor Gallagher - Chelsea to Atletico Madrid (£38m)

Another Chelsea product sold on for pure profit. Conor Gallagher was a surprise departure from Stamford Bridge in 2024 as the midfielder joinedAtletico Madrid in a £38m deal.

Gallagher had made 50 appearances for Chelsea the previous season, captaining the side on occasion, but was sold to the Spanish side after Enzo Maresca's arrival.

He spent 18 months in Madrid, before returning to London withTottenham Hotspur in January 2026.

3. Ivan Toney - Brentford to Al-Ahli (£40m)

Ivan Toney became the Saudi Pro League's latest high-profile recruit when he joined Al-Ahli from Brentford in 2024.

The forward has scored prolifically in the Middle East, with 72 goals in 93 games earning him a place on the plane with England for the 2026 World Cup.

Anthony Gordon's move to Barcelona makes him the second-most expensive Englishman to depart a Premier League club to head abroad.

Gordon scored 17 goals in all competitions last season have attracted the Catalans, and the Liverpudlian will become only the third Englishman to play for Barcelona in the last 100 years, after Gary Lineker and Marcus Rashford.

Harry Kane became the most expensive Englishman to leave England for a foreign side when he joined Bayern Munich for an initial fee of £82m in 2023.

"Harry Kane is the best transfer we've ever made," Bayern chief Uli Hoeness recently toldDas Erste, following the forward's prolific exploits in Munich. Kane has scored 146 goals in 147 games, winning two Bundesliga titles and the DFB-Pokal. He's been money well spent.
