Maxence Lacroix made his first World Cup appearance in France’s 4-1 win over Norway, a result that sealed first place in Group I. He also kept a promise to feed his home village with pizzas.
It has been his ritual since the tournament began, swapping France’s two-star shirt for the role of pizza courier after every game. Le Progres reports that the 26-year-old has pledged to buy pizzas for his supporters in Ajat, a village of 300.
Born in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges in Val-de-Marne, he grew up in the Dordogne commune. With the municipality screening every France match in the village hall, the Crystal Palace defender decided to treat those who have followed him since his earliest years.
First called up in March to cover William Saliba’s withdrawal for two friendlies in the United States, he debuted in the 2-1 win over Brazil. He then started the next match against Colombia, which France won 3-1.
A substitute since the start of the competition, Lacroix finally featured on Friday night against Norway. He contributed on the pitch and, more than 6,000 km from the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, he fed his first supporters back home.
