Fabrizio Romano explains what impact Anthony Gordon’s arrival at Barcelona would have on Marcus Rashford.

The Blaugrana have suddenly accelerated their attempts to sign the Newcastle United star. The Italian journalist has just revealed that the 25-year-old has already agreed personal terms with the Catalan giants, who must now negotiate a deal with the Magpies.

With Gordon potentially on his way to Barcelona, the question that poses itself is how this signing would impact Rashford’s future.

Would Barcelona continue to pursue Marcus Rashford after signing Gordon?

After finding himself an outcast at Ruben Amorim’s court, Rashford joined the LaLiga giants last summer on loan with an option to buy for €30 million (or £26m).

Although he played second fiddle to Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, the Englishman still contributed with 14 goals and as many assists.

In recent days, it has been reported that Barca boss Hansi Flick is keen to keep Rashford at Camp Nou. However, the management is reluctant to spend €30 million on the England international, instead gunning for a discount. On the other hand, Man Utd are refusing to negotiate new terms, causing a standoff.

According to Fabrizio Romano (via his YouTube channel), Gordon’s arrival might not necessarily change Barcelona’s plans for Rashford, in the sense that the Catalans are expected to try to recruit the Manchester native regardless.

However, the transfer market expert admits that Gordon’s signing could give Barca more leverage in their negotiations with MUFC, as they could argue that they ran out of transfer funds in an attempt to drive the price down. Therefore, it would be interesting to see who would budge first

Should Man Utd consider Rashford discount?

While he might be keen to keep Rashford in Catalunya, Flick would be less likely to entreat Barcelona to buy the Man Utd academy youth product if provided with a young alternative, who is also capable of covering the same playing roles.

Like Rasford, Gordon primarily plays as an inverted left winger, but he can also play in almost any role in the final third. Moreover, the former Everton man represents a younger, and perhaps hungrier profile.

Therefore, Man Utd should start reflecting on their options by searching the market for alternative Rashford suitors.

If other interested clubs are willing to pay £26 million or more, MUFC should stand their ground in their negotiations with Barcelona. Otherwise, they may find themselves forced to consider lower figures, especially if reinstating the player in Michael Carrick’s squad is no longer a viable option.
