Manchester City drew 2-all with AS Monaco on Wednesday night at the Stade Louis-II. Pep Guardiola’s side extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to six matches. Manchester City’s performance against Monaco did resemble that of a Pep Guardiola side. They dominated possession and dropped the hosts deep for large spells on Wednesday evening’s match. But a late Eric Dier penalty saw City drop points in their first away Champions League fixture of the new season. Coming out of the game, the overwhelming feeling was one of frustration, given that Manchester City did so much right but failed to leave the Stade Louis-II with all three points.
Speaking after Manchester City’s draw with AS Monaco, Pep Guardiola believed his team played well at the Stade Louis-II. The City manager was pleased with how his team controlled the match, although he was disappointed to see his team concede a late equaliser. Speaking on his team’s performance against Monaco, Pep Guardiola told the media: “We played a really good game. We are trying to create more chances and concede few, that’s what happened. They have fast, fast players. We concede few chances and create a lot in the Champions League, so I’m really pleased for that, but of course, we were close. We could not defend well the free kick, and we concede the penalty.”
“Football, you have to win, and it’s down to the result. If you analyse the game, in many things it was really good.”
“Step by step, we will do better, but many things, with the chances we found, especially Phil in the first half.”
“Many players did really good and we concede almost nothing. They defend so deep, so tight, we didn’t expect it with the way they have played.”
In quotes relayed by TeamTalk, Erling Haaland didn’t believe his team deserved to win. Manchester City’s number-nine was especially frustrated with his team’s second-half performance. He explained: “It doesn’t feel good. We didn’t win. We did things unnecessarily in the second half, and I don’t think we played good enough. We didn’t deserve to win, and that’s why [I was shaking my head].
“I think we need more energy, we need to get at them more as we did in the first half, we dominated much more.”
“In the second half, they took the lead much more, and I don’t think it’s good enough.”
The comments made by Pep Guardiola and Erling Haaland after Manchester City’s draw with AS Monaco are a good encapsulation of the game. There were plenty of positives to take from City’s performance, as Pep Guardiola pointed out. The way Wednesday evening’s match played out was in the manner of a typical City performance. They dominated possession, and all the signs were there that this new-look Manchester City side is becoming a Pep Guardiola side. That was a major positive to take out of the game.
But Erling Haaland’s comments do summarise the feeling at the final whistle. For Manchester City to do so much right and not win does leave a sense of frustration. City should have picked up three points against AS Monaco. But they threw them away when Nico conceded a ridiculous penalty. That took the gloss of a professional performance from Pep Guardiola’s side.
Frustration is the overwhelming feeling to come out of Manchester City’s draw with AS Monaco. City should’ve won but they didn’t, but they did extend their unbeaten run to six matches. But you do feel that they should have made it two wins from two in the UEFA Champions League.
