Liverpool are experiencing a difficult second season under Arne Slot as head coach.

The 47-year-old got off to the best possible start to life at Anfield - winning the Premier League title at the first attempt. But Slot has struggled to get a tune out of the defending champions this season - slumping to 10 league defeats in 31 matches.

There is zero chance of reclaiming the title and the Reds are instead in a fight just to requalify for the Champions League. This is despite Arne Slot and Richard Hughes fortifying the squad with £450m worth of new signings last summer.

With Slot only under contract until 2027 it has been speculated that FSG may be tempted to make a change in the dugout come summer.

Edwards and Hughes shoulder the blame

However trusted club insider James Pearce writes in the Athletic that club decision-makers are in no mood to sack Slot and instead the finger of blame is pointing elsewhere.

Sensationally it’s claimed that last season’s summer transfer campaign was a write-off - with Slot not getting the players he needs. To that end it’s Hughes - the sporting director - and FSG’s CEO of Football Michael Edwards who are seen as culprits for this bad campaign.

“Slot cannot carry the can for recruitment decisions given the greater input from FSG CEO of football Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes when it comes to allocating resources,” the report reads.

“Liverpool opted to buy technical players at a time when the Premier League was becoming more direct and physical.

“They have been hampered by a lack of pace and dynamism in wide areas, with the exits of Luis Diaz and Trent Alexander-Arnold proving more damaging than anyone imagined.”
