Arne Slot is under a lot of external pressure at Liverpool.

The head coach - signed as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement in 2024 - won the Premier League title in his first season in charge. But his second campaign has been much more difficult - with his Premier League champions slumping to 10 defeats in the league alone.

They are facing a battle to requalify for the Champions League next season and have got tricky quarter-finals in the FA Cup and Champions League against Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain respectively.

Slot has had no luck in integrating £450m worth of new signings - with Jeremie Frimpong, Alexander Isak and Giovanni all spending considerable portions of the season out injured.

It’s all added up to speculation that Slot could LOSE his job at the end of the season with his contract expiring in 2027.

No plans to sack Slot

But trusted club insider James Pearce states that there is NO change of head coach in mind by club decision-makers.

In fact - far from the jury being out on Slot at the end of the season it seems that the Boston-based owners are making plans to keep Slot around long-term.

“The decision-makers still retain faith in him and believe, with the right additions this summer, Slot can turn things around in the same way that Klopp did after a disappointing fifth-placed finish in 2022-23,” the report reads.

“FSG does not want to rip things up and start again this summer. Senior club figures have distanced themselves from suggestions that Slot is effectively on trial between now and the end of the season. They insist that no specific targets have been set to secure his job.”

Slot set to expand his power base

The mention of “right additions” is intriguing. It suggests that Slot may well have some input over transfer targets for the summer ahead.

And - if that is the case - there could well be the possibility of the Dutchman being the Reds’ head coach for the foreseeable future.

With FSG’s CEO of Football Michael Edwards and Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes both out of contract in 2027 there could well be plans afoot to expand Slot’s power base.

The Pearce report compares him with Jurgen Klopp - the last Liverpool head coach to win a title and who is beloved by supporters.

And while Slot may well have a long way to go to achieve that level of adoration on Merseyside he may well soon have the same kind of trust given to him by FSG.
