Fulham are edging closer to appointing Alvaro Arbeloa as their new head coach, with negotiations reportedly progressing towards a three-year agreement.

The Premier League club have been searching for a successor to Marco Silva following the Portuguese manager’s departure earlier this month.

While Fulham have maintained publicly that their recruitment process remains ongoing, Arbeloa has emerged as one of the leading candidates for the role.

Discussions between the two parties are understood to have covered key aspects of the project, including coaching staff appointments, squad planning and preparations for the upcoming season.

The 43-year-old left Real Madrid at the end of the 2025-26 campaign after a challenging but valuable spell in charge of the Spanish giants.

Arbeloa was promoted to the first-team position in January following the departure of Xabi Alonso and inherited a side facing significant pressure in multiple competitions.

His tenure lasted four months and produced mixed results.

Real Madrid were unable to close the gap on Barcelona in La Liga and suffered an early exit from the Copa del Rey after a surprise defeat to second-tier opposition.

However, there were also encouraging moments.

Arbeloa guided Madrid past Benfica and then Manchester City in the Champions League knockout rounds before eventually losing to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.

Many observers in Spain viewed his time at the Santiago Bernabeu within the context of a difficult dressing-room environment and a squad that had experienced instability before his arrival.

The former Spain international had built a strong reputation as a coach within Real Madrid’s academy structure before stepping into senior management.

A move to Fulham would represent the next stage of his development and provide him with his first long-term managerial project at senior level.

The west London club offer a considerably different environment from the intense scrutiny that surrounds Real Madrid.

Fulham have established themselves as a stable Premier League side in recent years and narrowly missed out on European qualification last season.

Silva’s five-year reign brought promotion, consolidation in the top flight and a strong platform for future growth.

The challenge for Fulham’s hierarchy has been identifying a successor capable of building on that foundation rather than starting again from scratch.

Arbeloa appears to fit that profile.

His experience as both a player and coach at the highest level has impressed decision-makers during the interview process.

If the deal is completed, Arbeloa will begin his first full season in management in one of Europe’s most demanding leagues.

Fulham supporters will hope his arrival can help the club take the next step after several years of steady progress under Silva.
