Fulham name Álvaro Arbeloa head coach on three-year deal after Marco Silva exit | OneFootball

Sunderland’s Premier League rivals Fulham have appointed former Liverpool and Real Madrid defender Álvaro Arbeloa as their new head coach on a three-year contract.

He succeeds Marco Silva, who left for Benfica after his deal expired, ending a successful spell in west London.

Fulham were the only side to complete a Premier League double over Sunderland last season, so the move will catch the eye of Black Cats supporters before the new campaign.

Arbeloa enjoyed a distinguished playing career with Real Madrid, Liverpool and West Ham United. He made 98 appearances for Liverpool before returning to Madrid, where he won major honours.

The 43-year-old has since turned to coaching and was working at Real Madrid until May. He now returns to the Premier League with Fulham, who have acted swiftly to replace Silva.

After confirmation of his appointment, Arbeloa said it was an honour to begin a new chapter at what he called London’s oldest club. He spoke of responsibility, thanked Shahid Khan and Tony Khan for their trust, and said he is eager to experience the Craven Cottage atmosphere and start pre-season with the squad next week, adding he is sure they will enjoy an incredible journey together.
