Fulham prepared to break transfer record for Man City star | OneFootball

Fulham are prepared to break their transfer record in a bid to sign James McAtee from Manchester City.

McAtee has struggled for regular first-team football since returning to Manchester City in the summer, following two seasons on loan at Sheffield United. He has totalled just 369 minutes across all competitions, with his only starts having come in the League Cup.

Several clubs are monitoring his situation and Fulham are among those interested in a deal. According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Marco Silva is a huge admirer of the midfielder and prepared to test City’s resolve with a £40m bid. Fulham’s current transfer record is the £34m paid to sign Emile Smith Rowe from Arsenal last summer.

Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and West Ham have also been credited with interest in the player, who formed part of City’s FA Youth Cup-winning side in 2019/20.

McAtee’s teammates from that side included Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who have each become senior England internationals since leaving the Etihad. Another of that team, Liam Delap, has been tipped for a call-up in March after impressing at Ipswich Town this season. The 21-year-old has scored eight top-flight goals for the Tractor Boys.

Pep Guardiola discussed McAtee’s development earlier this month after the midfielder’s impressive cameo in the 2-0 win at Leicester.

“He made us believe that maybe he should’ve had more minutes but he’s young, and a lot of games still to play, but of course he played really good,” Guardiola said.

“And the most important is all of his (Manchester City) teammates were so happy, because he has big respect for how he behaves in the locker room.”
