Daniel Farke was sent off after Leeds United’s 1-0 home defeat to Manchester City, having confronted referee Peter Bankes at full time.
City led 1-0 when January signing Antoine Semenyo finished from close range on the stroke of half time. Moments earlier, Brenden Aaronson was denied by Gianluigi Donnarumma in the City goal.
Leeds piled on the pressure after the break but last-ditch defending and impressive goalkeeping kept them out. At the whistle, Farke ran onto the pitch to confront the officials, went face to face with Bankes, pointed and shouted, then was dismissed. Goalkeeper Karl Darlow and captain Ethan Ampadu tried to usher him away.
It is possible Farke was frustrated by time-keeping, with the whistle sounding as Leeds launched a free-kick into City’s third. Guardiola had moments earlier remonstrated with the fourth official about ending the match sooner, but stopped once it finished.
Assistant Eddie Riemer said he had a brief chat with Farke and pointed to time-wasting and a yellow card in added time. He felt officials should have allowed a final ball with seconds left. He added that Farke entered the pitch to question the decision, which brought the dismissal.
Farke will serve at least a one-match touchline ban and will also likely face further retrospective action from the FA. Leeds host Sunderland on Tuesday and he will not be on the touchline for that game. It remains to be seen whether he will be allowed in the stadium or watch from the stands.
