Leeds United are not pursuing a move for Newcastle United's Matt Targett.

Leeds United did have an interest in Newcastle United’s Matt Targett, but they have not made an official move for the left-back, who will not be arriving at Elland Road before the February 3rd deadline.

Daniel Farke’s side are flying high at the top of the Championship, but the boss is looking to strengthen if the right opportunity arises.

Junior Firpo is the only senior left-footed left-back at the club, and there are doubts about the future of the ex-Barcelona man, who is out of contract in the summer.

Therefore, it would be no surprise if Leeds were in the market for someone in that position, and it had been claimed that Targett was someone the Yorkshire outfit were close to signing.

However, when speaking to the Geordie Boot Boys, reporter Graeme Bailey played down talk that a move was advanced.

“From what I understand, it was no more than interest from Leeds. They didn’t make a bid. They’re definitely not going to pay a fee for Matt Targett. He’s not an easy one to get out of Newcastle.

“We know Dean Smith at Charlotte FC still likes him, so that could be an option. And that could happen after Monday’s deadline as the MLS transfer window is still open. Leeds could be an option in the summer. But not for now. As I understand, he’s not going to Leeds.”

Leeds United must aim higher than Matt Targett

Targett has had a very good career, with the bulk of his appearances in the game coming in the Premier League. So, he certainly has a good pedigree, and his experience could help Leeds as they look to win promotion.

But, the reality is that he hasn’t played regular football for two years now, and there’s nothing to suggest that he is a better player than Firpo, who has been very good when he’s available this season.

Even when he is out injured, Sam Byram has stepped in and done well, so it’s not like Leeds are in a situation where they simply have to sign a left-back. Instead, it’s about taking a player if they improve the team, and they will also have one eye on the Premier League.

If they brought in Targett, it would feel like a short-term move, and an unnecessary one.

So, it would make sense for Leeds to stick with what they have for now, and then they will have to address Firpo’s future and the left-back position in general in the summer, when they hope to be a top-flight side.
