Gabigol was sent off for an obscene gesture in Santos’ 3-1 win over Vitória at Vila Belmiro on Saturday, in the 18th round of the Brasileirão.

VAR called referee Rafael Rodrigo Klein to review the incident, and he showed a straight red. It came four minutes after his headed goal, at 14 minutes of the second half. According to Diario Do Peixe, the dismissal followed a hush sign, then an obscene gesture towards a supporter. He had already been booked for climbing the low barrier to celebrate with the Santos fans.

Santos had led 2-0 through Miguelito and Barreal before the number nine added the third.

The league now pauses for the World Cup and resumes in July. The next match had been slated against Botafogo, but as that date will coincide with the Sudamericana play-off, Gabigol should serve his suspension against Chapecoense at Vila Belmiro.

It was not the first such case in Série A. On Sunday 24, Remo forward Jajá was sent off for the same gesture in a 2-1 loss to Athletico-PR at Mangueirão in the 17th round, and Corinthians saw dismissals for Allan, against Fluminense in the ninth round on 2 April, and André, against Palmeiras in the 11th round on 12 April.
