Gabigol excelled but Santos were pegged back to a draw by San Lorenzo in the Copa Sudamericana at Vila Belmiro.
Gabriel Bontempo opened the scoring from Gabigol's pass, and a Gabigol free-kick led to the second before the break. According to Globo.com, the forward was outstanding and central to Santos' best attacking moves.
The hosts faded after the break. Goalkeeper Gabriel Brazão allowed a questionable De Ritis shot to beat him, then Auzmendi levelled when left one-on-one as the defence lost shape amid a flurry of changes.
Rollheiser was lively in the first half, involved in the opener, then withdrawn at half-time. Surprise starter Miguelito contributed in attack and worked back early in the second half. Oliva anchored midfield and missed a clear chance, choosing the wrong finish.
Barreal deputised well at left-back for the absent Escobar, while Igor Vinícius offered width but faded late. Willian Arão showed improvement alongside Oliva yet errors crept in. Lautaro Díaz, Rony, Rafael Gonzaga and debutant Samuel Pierri could not shift the momentum.
Lucas Veríssimo was booked and will miss the next decisive Sudamericana match through suspension. Coach Cuca’s initial set-up functioned, but too many changes, some fitness driven, ultimately undermined the result.
