On holiday from Santos, Gabriel Barbosa watched Brazil draw 1-1 with Morocco at MetLife Stadium in the United States, the team’s World Cup opener on Saturday 13.

According to Diario Do Peixe, the striker, known as Gabigol, was recognised by Brazilian fans who approached him, and he wore a Brazil shirt personalised with Neymar Jr’s name.

Friends for years, Gabigol is also Neymar’s brother-in-law, dating his sister Rafaella. Many of Brazil’s number 10’s relatives and friends were also in attendance.

Santos supporters were out in force, some carrying club flags. One displayed a flag featuring Pelé and Neymar, half in Brazil colours and half in a Santos kit. Another wore the classic blue 2012 centenary shirt from Neymar’s first spell.

The squad’s holidays end on Sunday 21, with a return set for Monday 22 at CT Rei Pelé as Gabigol and team-mates begin a mid-season camp. Early July brings friendlies in Portugal before competitive action resumes. Barbosa is Santos’ leading scorer this season and among their chief providers of assists.
