“It’s nothing that I can comment on. I went a little behind. But I have had a good dialogue with the national team management and will be fully ready when the World Cup squad gathers on May 27.”

He was speaking to Hallandsporten after being named in head coach Graham Potter’s 26-man squad.

The Leeds United left-back is sidelined with a hamstring problem, having missed the last two matches against Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur, and remains a doubt for the run-in.

Leeds assistant coach Edmund Riemer said he would be assessed daily to see if he can face Brighton or West Ham, and with safety secured the club are unlikely to rush anyone back.

Following the announcement, Graham Potter discussed fitness issues for others, including Tottenham’s Dejan Kulusevski, who missed out, and Liverpool striker Alexander Isak, but did not mention Gudmundsson.

“It will be tough to go straight from a season in the Premier League to playing in the World Cup, but at the same time it is a big dream for me,” Gudmundsson added. “I had a great season in Leeds where we got the contract and then getting to hang out with the national team in Mexico and the USA will be crazy fun.”
