Gunners boss worried after Brazilian striker stretchered off in FA Cup defeat by Manchester United
Gabriel Jesus will undergo knee scans on Monday as Arsenal seek to learn the extent of the injury that led to him being stretchered off during their defeat by Manchester United.
The Gunners were beaten on penalties after an eventful 1-1 draw on Sunday and dumped out of the FA Cup at the third round stage for the second season in a row.
Jesus was forced to come off after just 40 minutes at the Emirates Stadium when he injured his knee attempting to tackle United captain Bruno Fernandes.
The striker received treatment on the pitch from Arsenal’s medical staff and was carried off on a stretcher. Arteta confirmed after the game that Jesus had been sent home, adding he would go for tests on Monday.
“Big worry, that’s my feeling,” said Arteta, when asked to give an update on Jesus in his post-match press conference.
“He had to come off on a stretcher, with a lot of pain, touching his knee. It’s not looking good. I think it is the other one [and not the knee he injured at the 2022 World Cup].
“But the worrying factor is more the feeling that he had, when he had to come off, and the pain that he was in.”
Arsenal face a nervous wait to learn the results of Jesus’ scans and Arteta is due to hold a press conference on Tuesday morning, when he can give an update on the Brazilian’s fitness.
Jesus has been dealing with knee pain for a number of years after suffering an injury at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He has, however, looked back to his best recently and, before Sunday’s loss to United, had scored six goals in his last six games.
Jesus being out would ramp up the pressure on Arsenal to bring in a new forward during this month’s transfer window.
Arsenal are already without Bukayo Saka until at least March after he tore his hamstring last month. Ethan Nwaneri is also out for a few weeks with a muscle injury and Jesus being sidelined would leave the Gunners with only four fit senior forwards.
Arsenal missed a hatful of chances against United, finishing the match with 26 shots on goal and 55 touches inside the opposition box.
It was a similar story on Tuesday, when Arsenal were guilty of missing plenty of opportunities as they lost 2-0 to Newcastle in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie. Arsenal are next in action on Wednesday night, when they host Tottenham in a north London derby in the Premier League.
“Regardless of if we would’ve won the last two games, it’s exciting and [we are] looking forward to playing the biggest game of the season for our supporters and what it means to us,” said Arteta.
