Examinations have confirmed right hamstring injuries for João Schmidt and Gabriel Menino, and the Santos midfielders are not expected to play again before the World Cup. Both have begun treatment at the club’s CEPRAF facility.
According to Diario Do Peixe, João Schmidt started the 2-0 win at Coritiba in the second leg of the fifth phase of the Copa do Brasil at Couto Pereira on Wednesday 13. He felt his hamstring and departed after five minutes.
Gabriel Menino came on after 24 minutes of the second half in the same tie. He then left on a stretcher at 50 minutes, with coach Cuca having already used all substitutions. It was his first game back after more than a month out with a right hamstring problem.
Menino joined on loan from Atlético-MG in January on a deal to the end of the year. He has 15 appearances and two goals, scoring against Velo Clube in the Paulista and Chapecoense in the Brasileiro, plus one Copa do Brasil outing.
Schmidt, from São Paulo, turns 33 on Tuesday 19. He has played 114 games for Santos with four goals and four assists, and is under contract until the end of 2027. This season he has featured 20 times across Paulista, Brasileiro, Copa do Brasil and the Sudamericana.
