Stade Malherbe Caen, 10th in National, have dismissed Maxime d'Ornano and appointed Gaël Clichy as head coach, the club said in a statement. The club is owned by Kylian Mbappé and his family.
The change comes days before the new year, with d'Ornano departing after taking charge at the start of the season. The decision was presented as a bid to inject fresh impetus for the second half of the campaign.
Within minutes the Normandy side named former France left-back Clichy, 40, as his successor. The length of his contract was not disclosed. The appointment was framed around his top-level experience, modern football knowledge and daily standards.
After a playing career with Arsenal and Manchester City, Clichy worked as Thierry Henry’s assistant with France Under-21s. That team won silver at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
This is his first job as a head coach. He has said he is very ambitious and wants to coach the best teams, while accepting he does not know if he will achieve that.
