Galatasaray vice-president Abdullah Kavukcu has urged Julian Nagelsmann to make Leroy Sané a World Cup starter for Germany. He argued the winger remains vital despite debate over his consistency and demeanour.
"He has to be a first-team regular at the World Cup," said Kavukcu. "I wish Germany every success at the World Cup. I dream of a World Cup final between Germany and Turkey," he told Sport Bild.
Sané is not yet an automatic pick for the Süper Lig leaders. He played only one half in the Champions League round of 16 defeat to Liverpool, and later served a ban after a red card in the Beşiktaş derby.
"We can’t confirm those preconceptions at all. The Leroy we see here is a completely different person," said Kavukcu. "He’s part of the family, he has a good relationship with the manager and is fully committed."
After 35 appearances for Galatasaray, Sané has six goals and eight assists. He started the 4-3 win in Switzerland without convincing, then came on against Ghana to set up Deniz Undav’s 2-1 winner. Nagelsmann said, "Leroy knows what is required. He has to prove it."
Competition is fierce. Florian Wirtz and Kai Havertz are established, with Sané, Nick Woltemade and Serge Gnabry rotating in March. If Jamal Musiala reaches peak form in time, he will definitely be in the starting line-up.
