It was a terrible night for the Turkish champions at Anfield on Wednesday, with their 1-0 first-leg lead from Istanbul in the last-16 tie easily wiped away in a 4-0 rout on Merseyside that could and should have been much worse.

Galatasaray were totally outplayed from the outset by Arne Slot’s resurgent Reds as their woeful recent record on English soil - just one win on their last 13 visits - continued and they exited Europe’s elite club competition for another season, with Liverpool setting up a reunion with holders Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals.

A sobering evening was made much worse by injuries, with attacking talisman Osimhen hurt early as his left wrist was caught by the knee of Ibrahima Konate during an aerial challenge.

The Nigeria striker was in considerable pain and received lengthy treatment before clashing with Liverpool’s players who evidently felt that it was taking too long to get the game restarted.

Osimhen continued with his wrist strapped up but did not look comfortable for the remainder of the first half, with Galatasaray initially holding off on plans to replace him with Lang.

Manager Okan Buruk eventually made a double substitution at the break, replacing Osimhen and right-back Sacha Boey with Lang and former Manchester City forward Leroy Sane, who was booed by the Anfield crowd.

However, Lang was also replaced late on himself by Mauro Icardi after suffering a freak injury.

The Dutch winger was fairly prevented from getting a chance on goal by Liverpool substitute Curtis Jones and his momentum took him stumbling into the advertising hoardings behind the goal, where his hand got caught and a deep wound opened up on his right thumb.

Lang was in significant discomfort and bleeding as he was consoled by team-mates and opponents, with the player receiving treatment from Galatasaray’s medical staff before being given oxygen and stretchered off following a lengthy stoppage.

"He is going to the hospital (because of an) important issue he has with his finger," Buruk said after the game.

He was quoted as saying on social media: “He has a serious issue. They took him there quickly. If an operation is needed, a decision will be made right here immediately.”

On Osimhen, the Galatasaray boss added: “Victor Osimhen's condition will also become clear after the checks.”

It was reported in the Turkish media that Osimhen is believed to have avoided a fracture.
