O’Reilly brace beats Arsenal to earn City’s ninth League Cup success

Pep Guardiola recalled James Trafford to the starting lineup and the English shot-stopper repaid the faith shown in him with a splendid early triple save, rushing out to expertly deny Kai Havertz before stopping Bukayo Saka’s two efforts on the rebound.

City ended the half strongly with good possession of the ball and came close to the opener, but Erling Haaland headed over from Antoine Semenyo’s cross.

On the hour mark, we deservedly took the lead after Rayan Cherki’s cross slipped through Kepa Arrizabalaga’s hands and fell kindly for the onrushing O’Reilly to head us ahead.

Four minutes later, O’Reilly was in the right place at the right time again to head in a wonderful second from a delightful Matheus Nunes cross.

Arsenal pushed for a goal back and saw an effort clip off the woodwork, but we remained rigid and resolute to claim Carabao Cup glory for the ninth time in our history.
