Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor is expecting another tough assignment against Barclays Women’s Super League title rivals Manchester United this evening.

The Blues travel to The Progress With Unity Stadium in Leigh aiming to preserve their long unbeaten run in the English top flight.

Chelsea won both league fixtures against Manchester United by a single goal last season and Bompastor is anticipating another tough test.

“The games against Manchester United are always tough,” Bompastor said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “If you look at the table right now, they’re up the top for a reason. They have a lot of quality in their squad and they are a really tough team to play against. We are travelling to their ground again and we know from last season that it’s not easy.

“We are expecting a tough game and we know that they have the quality to perform. We need to find the right balance between focusing on them and the quality that they have and focusing on ourselves, being confident in the quality that we have. If we are at our best level, we can perform against any team.

“Our mindset is about focusing on this game. We want to perform even when we know it will be a tough game.”

Both sides go into the game with some unavailable players, however, it is Chelsea who boast the greater squad depth. Bompastor went on to highlight the importance of The Blues having a large squad of quality players.

She said “Depth is crucial for a club like Chelsea. When you want to compete in all four competitions, you have to have that depth in your squad.

“I think we know exactly what we will need to compete in every competition. The depth is crucial when you want to go deep and far in every competition.

“With this league being the toughest and most competitive league in the world, when you want to compete at the highest level, it’s crucial that you have the depth.”

Chelsea’s latest Barclays Women’s Super League title success was sealed with a 1-0 victory at Manchester United back in April. Bompastor looks back on that moment fondly.

She said “Good memories, even though I maybe wasn’t expecting the title to be won that night. Really good memories because this league is really tough and being able to win the title with games left, against a big rival was great.

“This game will be completely different. We are going there with confidence but not over-confident because Manchester United are a strong team.”

Chelsea’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Manchester United kicks-off at 7.30pm this evening.
