Gareth Bale is fronting a US takeover of League One side Plymouth Argyle.
According to reports, former Real Madrid star and Welsh football legend Gareth Bale is fronting a US takeover of League One outfit Plymouth Argyle.
It's been a crazy summer at Home Park already for the Pilgrims, with the departure of Miron Muslic for 2. Bundesliga side FC Schalke 04, the appointment of Tom Cleverley as his replacement, and four new signings already.
However, things could be about to get even more exciting for Argyle supporters, as former Real Madrid star Bale is reportedly in talks to front an American takeover of the Devon-based side, following in the footsteps of former teammate Luka Modrić.
That's according to The Telegraph's John Percy, who reported on Monday afternoon that talks are taking place between the club and the investment group, which also includes members of the American-based Storch family.
The five-time Champions League winner called time on his playing career in 2023, and has since kept a rather low profile, occasionally being spotted as a pundit, and pursuing his love for golf.
However, that could all change this summer as reports from The Telegraph suggest that the 35-year-old is now fronting a takeover of League One side Plymouth.
Argyle chairman Simon Hallett has been keen on investment, but has confirmed in his most recent update that any talks from other parties have failed to materialise.
Despite this, the US consortium is said to be in talks with the Pilgrims' chairman over taking full control at Home Park, which will come as very exciting news for supporters.
Bale wouldn't be the first former Galactico to spearhead the takeover of an EFL club, as former teammate Modric did the same with Swansea City recently.
The report says it's unclear how the Welshman became involved in the proposed takeover of the Pilgrims, but talks are said to be very much ongoing behind the scenes.
It's been a rollercoaster 12 months for Plymouth supporters. From the highs of an excellent FA Cup run which saw them dispatch Liverpool, to the lows of relegation on the loss of Muslic, it's been quite the ride.
Monday's news will come as a hugely exciting boost for supporters though, and the exact news will be music to the ears of new head coach Cleverley, following his appointment on Friday.
Hallett has already confirmed that Argyle have a healthy budget to play with next season, and has backed this up by adding four new players to the squad already.
However, based on the recent seasons in the Championship and constant searches for external investment, it's unlikely that the current owner has the financial means to take the Devon-based side to the next level.
To have a takeover fronted by someone such as Bale, who lived and breathed success at Madrid, along with the financial backing of an American consortium, the sky truly is the limit for this project if the takeover is completed.
The news today is certainly a story that will have raised eyebrows across the footballing world, and developments in the future will be watched very closely.
