Garro and Gui Negão star as Corinthians progress in Copa do Brasil

On the evening of Wednesday, September 10, Corinthians faced Athletico-PR at the Neo Química Arena for the second leg of the Copa do Brasil quarter-finals and won 2-0. The goals for the Alvinegro were scored by midfielder Rodrigo Garro and forward Gui Negão. With this result, the club from Parque São Jorge advances to the semifinals – their fourth consecutive – after achieving an aggregate score of 3-0.

The coaching staff could not count on the following players for the match: defender André Ramalho (virus), midfielders Raniele, recovering from a muscle injury in his left thigh, and André Carrillo, in recovery from ligament surgery on his left ankle. Defender Félix Torres, midfielder José Martínez, and forward Ángel Romero, who were with their national teams for the FIFA International Match Calendar, were also unavailable.

In light of this, coach Dorival Júnior lined up the following team to start the game: Hugo Souza; Matheuzinho, João Pedro Tchoca, Gustavo Henrique, and Fabrizio Angileri; Maycon, Matheus Bidu, Breno Bidon (Charles), and Rodrigo Garro (Ryan); Memphis Depay (Vitinho) and Gui Negão (Yuri Alberto).

The bench options included: Felipe Longo, Cacá, Hugo Farias, João Vitor ‘Jacaré’, André, Ryan, Charles, Dieguinho, Kayke, Vitinho, Talles Magno, and Yuri Alberto.

Athletico-PR Lineup

With Odair Hellmann suspended and led by assistant Fábio Moreno, Athletico-PR started the match with: Santos; Benavídez, Aguirre, Terán, Esquivel, and Léo Derick; Felipinho, Dudu Kogitski, and Elán Ricardo; Julimar and Viveros.

Refereeing

The referee was Davi de Oliveira Lacerda (ES), assisted by Rafael da Silva Alves (RS) and Nailton Junior de Sousa Oliveira (CE). The fourth official and VAR were, respectively, Fernando Antonio Mendes de Salles Nascimento Filho (PA) and Diego Pombo Lopez (BA).

First Half

The opening minutes of the match between Corinthians and Athletico-PR saw the home team with greater ball possession and more attacking attempts. The Alvinegro started the game with a 3-5-2 formation, with Matheus Bidu as the left wing-back and Fabrizio Angileri as the third defender.

At five minutes, Corinthians posed a threat. After a good exchange of passes in the midfield, midfielder Maycon found Fabrizio Angileri on the left side. Number 26 crossed into the area, and forward Gui Negão almost headed it in! Five minutes later, the Alvinegro exchanged passes on the offensive left side with Matheus Bidu and Breno Bidon, and number 21 crossed into the hands of goalkeeper Santos.

At 11 minutes, midfielder Rodrigo Garro received a cross from the left and, with a bicycle kick, sent it over the Athletico goalkeeper! Two minutes later, forward Julimar won a ball dispute with Fabrizio Angileri but crossed into the area to no one, leaving the ball for defender João Pedro Tchoca.

With 20 minutes into the first half, Corinthians, although not creating any clear goal chances, controlled ball possession and exchanged many passes, mainly in the defensive system. Athletico-PR, despite needing the result, did not press in attack.

At 25 minutes, Athletico-PR opened the score after a run by forward Viveros, but VAR annulled it, as he committed a foul in the play's origin after a push on midfielder Maycon's back. Five minutes later, the Alvinegro crafted a good play with Breno Bidon, Rodrigo Garro, and Memphis Depay, who shot across into the hands of goalkeeper Santos!

At 37 minutes, the game's panorama remained the same. Corinthians, with the advantage from the first leg, occupied more of the offensive field but without converting the passes into clear chances. Three minutes later, Maycon found Rodrigo Garro inside, in the midfield, and the ball fell to Breno Bidon, who shot wide with a deflection.

From the corner taken by Rodrigo Garro, defender João Pedro Tchoca headed wide! At 43 minutes, Corinthians' first goal! Forward Gui Negão stole the ball from the opponent in the build-up and served Rodrigo Garro, who dribbled past goalkeeper Santos and found the net!

At 44 minutes, the first change for Corinthians: forward Memphis Depay left the field for midfielder Vitinho. When the clock hit 45 minutes, the referee added three more minutes. At 45, end of the first half: Corinthians 1 x 0 Athletico-PR.

Second Half

For the second half, coach Dorival Júnior made no substitutions. The first minutes of the second half, like the first, saw greater ball possession for the Alvinegro. With 10 minutes into the second half, Athletico-PR became more offensive, making more attacking changes in midfield at the break.

Regarding created chances, neither team showed effectiveness in attack until then. At 17 minutes, Corinthians' second goal! Midfielder Vitinho made a good play in the midfield, and after a dispute inside the area, forward Gui Negão pushed it into the net! Score: Corinthians 2 x 0 Athletico-PR!

At 21 minutes, Athletico-PR threatened from the right side, but the shot went over the goal. Four minutes later, the referee awarded a penalty after the ball hit Matheuzinho's arm following a cross from the left that directly struck number 2's arm. Even after VAR review, the penalty was confirmed.

On the penalty, Benavídez shot to Hugo Souza's left corner, who made the save!!! At 32 minutes, Corinthians made their second substitution: forward Gui Negão left the field for Yuri Alberto. Three minutes later, the Alvinegro made a mistake in the build-up, and midfielder Dudu shot at goalkeeper Hugo Souza!

At 38 minutes, two more changes for Corinthians: midfielders Breno Bidon and Rodrigo Garro left for Charles and Ryan. At 41, Yuri Alberto received a deep pass and rolled it to Vitinho, but the Paraná team's defense cleared the danger. In the next play, number 9's shot was blocked by the opposing defense.

When the clock hit 45 minutes, the referee added five more minutes. At 50 minutes, end of the match: Corinthians 2 x 0 Athletico-PR!

Next Commitment

After facing Athletico-PR in the second leg of the Copa do Brasil quarter-finals, Corinthians shifts focus back to the Brazilian Championship. Next Saturday, September 13, at 9:00 PM (Brasília time), at Maracanã Stadium, the Alvinegro will visit Fluminense in a match valid for the 23rd round of the national tournament.
