Gary Bennett has joined the coaching staff at Hebburn Town Women, returning to a former club ahead of the new campaign.
According to Sunderland Echo, the former Sunderland defender will work alongside managers Mark Elliott and Alex Ross as the team prepares for the new Durham FA Womens Premier League season.
Bennett moved to Wearside in 1984 and spent 11 years with the Black Cats, making over 360 appearances. He was part of the Sunderland sides that won the old Division Three title and finished runners-up in the Milk Cup and FA Cup.
He left in 1995, later turning out for Carlisle United, Scarborough, Darlington and Hebburn before retiring. He subsequently managed Darlington and is now widely known for his work with Show Racism the Red Card and as a BBC Newcastle co-commentator and pundit. He was awarded an MBE in 2022 for services to anti-racism in football and society.
Bennett described the role as a chance to be involved with a club progressing on and off the pitch. He said strong foundations are in place to help players perform and that he looks forward to helping Hebburn Town push to the next level.
Steve Moore, head of women’s football, said bringing Bennett back to coach alongside Mark and Alex is a fantastic outcome. He said Bennett’s pedigree is clear and that his work with the squad complements their aims, welcoming the former Hornets player back.
