Former Wolves manager Gary O’Neil has held discussions with the club over a return to Molineux, less than a year after his dismissal, according to reports from BBC Sport. The 42-year-old, who was sacked in December 2024 after a poor start to the campaign, is understood to have engaged in positive initial talks as the club searches for a successor to Vitor Pereira, dismissed on Sunday.

Wolves, currently winless after ten Premier League matches, have begun an urgent process to stabilise their season. O’Neil, who previously guided the club to safety despite limited resources, remains a popular figure among sections of the fanbase for his pragmatic approach and strong man-management.

While Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards is also under consideration, his appointment would be complicated by the need for a significant compensation fee, leaving O’Neil as the more attainable candidate. However, club sources insist he is one of several names under review, with at least one other candidate represented by influential agent Jorge Mendes, whose connections have historically shaped Wolves’ managerial appointments, including Nuno Espirito Santo, Bruno Lage, and Pereira.

Talks are expected to continue over the coming days as the club seeks to make a swift appointment.
