Gian Piero Gasperini spoke to reporters after Roma’s 4-1 friendly defeat at Cardiff City. Here are his comments on today’s defeat and the transfer market.

“We were still struggling, especially at the back, in the first half. We conceded some goals from rebounds, which determined this result. Then we also did some good things when we managed to get forward. But if you’re that distracted and out of shape, it becomes more difficult.”

“The transfer window has been unusual because of the World Cup; it’s practically underway now. From here on out, I expect something. Several players have left, and the team absolutely needs to be completed.”

“Some players will need to arrive to round out the squad and make it competitive. The team will be competitive, and it still is, but right now we have three midfielders out. There’s someone who just arrived, but that can happen in these August matches. The lads are all working well, and they always have the right spirit. We hope to complete the squad as soon as possible because this is already the third week completed.”

“Castro? An excellent signing, it was a great move, one of those that improves you. Castro is a center forward, Malen is a center forward, and there are also situations where they can play together. We have the prospect of playing a lot of games, Malen never had a break in the second half of the season, and if that happens, we risk losing his quality as well.”

“When you play in the Champions League, you need a complete, competitive squad, without losing the quality of the substitution. Castro is a 2004 player who wanted to come to Rome at all costs.”

“Regarding last year’s squad, I said I need one defender, one winger, two forwards. Then, if a player leaves, it’s clear you have to replace him. That was my goal, and it didn’t seem that difficult. It’s also clear that we’re trying to bring in quality players like Castro. Now this guy has arrived to complete the defense, and it was necessary because we were only five. For those who play in cup competitions, it’s essential to have two players per position.”
