Gastón Gaudio announces bid for Independiente presidency | OneFootball

Former tennis champion Gastón Gaudio has confirmed he will run for president of Independiente in December’s elections to renew the club’s leadership. He set out his intentions on Tuesday.

"It is the most important day of my life. I am standing as a candidate for president, the decision is made. I do not want anyone who in the last 20 years has harmed the club," he said, speaking to Radio La Red.

"I am open to everyone joining. We must find a way to be together for the good, as has happened for years at Lanús."

He called the step a difficult decision after postponements due to other commitments, adding, "I had many commitments, travelling a lot, and today the day arrived. It is a club I love and it is huge."

The ballot is set to include four candidacies, Gaudio, Luciano Nakis for Lista Roja, journalist Enrique Sacco for Movimiento Independiente Auténtico, and club great Daniel Bertoni, proposed by Auténticos Rojos.

Voting is scheduled for Sunday 13 December, with the date to be ratified at a General Assembly on Tuesday at the club’s Avellaneda headquarters. Last week Gaudio travelled to Miami for a meeting with Qatar’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Than.
