Gateshead manager Rob Elliot has hailed Sunderland forward Ethan Moore’s loan impact and says he wants to make the 21-year-old’s stay permanent.

“Ethan has been absolutely superb and we know he’s had a really difficult time with injuries. He didn’t really play a lot of football before he came into Gateshead.” He was speaking to Sunderland Echo.

Moore returned after over two years out last August in a 3-2 Under-21s defeat to Southampton. After a handful of academy outings, he joined Gateshead on loan in February and debuted in a 1-0 loss to Boston United. Days later, a 2-1 home defeat to Brackley Town left Elliot’s side bottom, 11 points from safety.

Since then they have lost only two of 14, a surge that has moved them eight points clear of the drop. Their National League status will be secured with at least two points from their remaining three games.

Moore’s nine appearances have all come from the bench, though he featured prominently across the Bank Holiday double header, as Gateshead took four points against Carlisle United and Scunthorpe United.

He hopes to earn a first start in a run-in that includes Aldershot Town, Altrincham and Jermain Defoe’s Woking. “I like that desire to do well and we are hoping to get him signed up and sealed for the future because he’s someone that is a pleasure to coach and there is so much potential there.”
