Barcelona midfielder Gavi has never been a player who hides from attention, criticism or responsibility.

Whether wearing the Barça shirt or representing Spain on the international stage, the 21-year-old continues to stand out not only because of his footballing qualities but also because of his personality and leadership.

In a recent interview with AS, the Spanish international opened up about how he views himself, the criticism that has followed him since his breakthrough, his relationship with teammates and his admiration for fellow Barcelona star Lamine Yamal.

Gavi explains why coaches always trust him

Throughout his young career, Gavi has earned the trust of several high-profile managers, including Xavi Hernandez, Ronald Koeman, Luis Enrique, Luis de la Fuente and now Hansi Flick.

Asked about the nicknames former coaches have given him, Gavi remained humble and focused on what he believes defines him as a player and person.

“(Smiles) I don’t know—everyone can call me whatever they want. I’ve always seen myself as a very down-to-earth person who’s upfront with everyone and goes all out for my own people.

“And, of course, I want to thank both Xavi and De la Fuente. They’ve always been very fond of me. Because I always go all out for my own.”

The Barcelona midfielder also believes his commitment to teammates plays a major role in why managers continue to place their faith in him.

“As I say, aside from the football, I always go all out for my teammates and defend them to the hilt. That helps a lot within a team and is important in the dressing room.

“There’s a lot of talk from the outside. They love me and hold me dear because of how I am in the dressing room. Always with my own. No matter what happens.”

Dealing with the criticism

Gavi has rarely escaped scrutiny since making his first-team debut at Barcelona as a teenager.

His aggressive style, versatility and role in different tactical systems often spark debate among supporters and pundits.

When asked whether criticism still affects him, especially after being deployed in different midfield positions for Spain and Barcelona, the midfielder made it clear that outside opinions have little influence on him.

“To tell you the truth, I’ve been used to criticism since I made my debut at 17.

“As I say, whilst showing respect, I’ll fight tooth and nail for my team. I don’t care what people say on the outside.

“On the pitch, I’m the one playing. Since I was 17, I’ve always faced it and, I’ll say it again, I like it and it motivates me even more. I’m not the sort to let it get to me.”

Praise for Lamine Yamal

One of the most eye-catching parts of the interview came when Gavi discussed Barcelona teammate Lamine Yamal.

The midfielder had no hesitation when asked about the teenager’s impact and importance, particularly after Spain’s recent performances.

“I’ve always said that Lamine Yamal is the best; he’s number one, that’s for sure. And when he comes on, it’s clear the team can improve because he’s excellent in one-on-one situations.

“There are others who do better in central areas, but the other day it was difficult because they were playing with a five-man defence and we weren’t accurate with our passing nor did we make many runs off the ball.

“Obviously, with Lamine on the pitch, he’s going to give us more than if, for example, it’s me,” he said.

A World Cup promise

Lastly, as for what he would do if Spain won the World Cup, the Barcelona midfielder left the door open to something memorable.

“In an interview the other day, I said I’d dye it pink, but oh well (laughs). I don’t really care, to be honest.

“I’d have to think about it, but I’d do anything to be world champion. If we’re world champions, I’d do whatever it takes,” he concluded.
