Geraldão, Corinthians idol who came through at Botafogo-SP alongside Sócrates, dies aged 77 | OneFootball

Former striker Geraldão has died aged 77, Botafogo-SP and Corinthians said in statements on Thursday. He first made his name at Botafogo-SP alongside Sócrates, later becoming an idol at Corinthians.

In Ribeirão Preto he played from 1970 to 1975 and, known as Geraldo Manteiga, finished as 1974 Campeonato Paulista top scorer with 23 in 33. Across that spell he hit 88 goals.

On 23 November 1974 he scored five in a 5-2 win over Portuguesa at Estádio Santa Cruz, and registered seven in derbies against Comercial.

After his Botafogo-SP stint he joined Corinthians, and also represented Juventus-SP, Francana, Mixto-MT, Grêmio and Internacional. At Corinthians he led the scoring in the 1977 Paulista title run that ended a 23-year wait.

He totalled 91 goals in 280 appearances for the club and added another state crown in 1979, by then alongside Sócrates. Born on 25 July 1949 in Álvares Machado, he was honoured in tributes from both clubs.
