Boavista, owned by Gérard Lopez, will have to cease activities at the end of July amid severe financial problems. The Portuguese club was informed on Wednesday.
O Jogo reports that the club failed to pay its monthly €55,000 fee, which requires it to return the keys to its premises, empty of people and property, on 31 July. The next step, still to be formalised, would be dissolution and liquidation.
The timing could hardly be worse for Lopez, coming less than 24 hours after Bordeaux were excluded from the national championships.
Founded in 1903, Boavista were relegated to the lowest tier of Portuguese football in summer 2025.
The club then withdrew from the 2025-26 district season in November, leaving it on the brink of disappearance. Lopez, 54, has been the majority shareholder since 2020.
