Gerard Moreno is back to a high level for Villarreal, decisive against Sevilla as he reached 10 LaLiga goals this season and 130 for the club after more than three months without muscle injuries.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, despite this form he has been omitted from Luis de la Fuente’s 55-man provisional World Cup list, a decision viewed through his recent injury record and his age, though at 34 he still has plenty to give.

His strike equalled his third-best league return as a Villarreal player, matching 23/24, and trailing only his 18 in 19/20 and 23 in 20/21, when he won the Zarra. Last season he managed three, all penalties, in 16 appearances. He also posted 13 and 16 at Espanyol.

The goal carried symbolic weight too, the captain moved to 130 for Villarreal, extending his status as the club’s all-time leading scorer. Next come Giuseppe Rossi on 82 and Diego Forlán on 59.

Beyond the numbers lies the feeling. With no physical interruptions, he has regained the influence that marks him out. Marcelino García Toral said he is finishing the season very well, is vital to a side sitting third in LaLiga, and that national team choices are for the head coach.
