CD Castellón are living chapter three of the old rule about not falling for a loanee, as Beñat Gerenabarrena has emerged from obscurity to become indispensable. At SkyFi Castalia, fans are already wondering if he can stay next season, El Periódico Mediterráneo notes.
Owned by Athletic Club, the midfielder pressed, won duels and used the ball smartly against Andorra, then added a deft first-time chip. Known as Gere, he has quickly become a fan favourite.
Castelló felt this before with Thomas van den Belt, whose elegance and feel for the tempo thrilled supporters. He returned to Feyenoord in the summer and was sold to Twente in the Eredivisie, where this season he has played 16 games and scored 2 goals.
Before that came Georgian midfielder Giorgi Kochorashvili in the first season under Haralabos Voulgaris, 22/23. He made 40 appearances and scored 4, left with a bitter taste after missing promotion, then became important back at Levante. Last summer he joined Sporting de Portugal, who are in the top eight of the Champions League.
Against Andorra he topped Sofascore with 9.3 and was the clear man of the match. In a post-game poll he earned 71 percent of votes, with goalkeeper Matthys second on 17 percent after another clean sheet.
Gere said he feels cherished by the support and that the crowd are driving a formidable home run. He felt their energy gives the team an extra push.
He praised the swift integration of Álvaro García and Raúl Sánchez, noting their personality and buy-in. On promotion, he stayed cautious, saying they are focused on the day to day and that, if they keep this up, hopefully it happens.
