Beñat Gerenabarrena heads into Athletic’s pre-season after a year of growth at CD Castellón, aiming to impress new head coach Edin Terzic. Another loan remains on the table as he targets a first-team breakthrough.
“I felt he knows exactly what he is coming into, he knows the project and he understands Athletic’s values,” he told Deia. “He told me to give everything, because in football you never know what might happen.” The chat took place in English, a language he has been practising during his spell in Castellón.
His loan at Castellón brought early turbulence, a slow start and a change in the dugout, yet he kept faith in his work. Under Pablo Hernández, opportunities arrived and he took them.
He highlighted the warmth he felt from the fanbase and club staff, important in his first stint away from home. Athletic tracked his progress closely through the season, maintaining regular contact and feedback even when his minutes dipped.
He has followed Terzic since Borussia Dortmund and is drawn to a style built on intensity, energy and personality, qualities with which he identifies.
He accepts competition in Athletic’s midfield will be fierce and that another loan could emerge. “My dream is to play for Athletic and at San Mamés,” he said, adding that “football is not a straight line” and he will keep working if the chance does not come this year.
