Stade de Gerland turns 100, a venue woven into Olympique Lyonnais’ story. OL no longer play in the seventh arrondissement arena, with LOU’s rugby side now making full use of it, but its terraces staged many of Lyon’s finest footballing moments.
According to Le Progres, the twin cast-iron lions at Gerland’s entrance will again take centre stage around LOU-Montpellier, drawing the familiar rush of cameras.
The industrial sculptures were created by Lyonnais artists Berger, Canisius and Ramay. Photo rituals have continued since the felines were set in place in 1962, a moment marked as an almost unreal rebirth.
Long before the lions arrived, Gerland and OL had already forged a bond. Those ties endured until 2015.
The lions remain Gerland’s enduring emblem, greeting crowds on match days. Photo stops at their paws continue on big occasions.
