Giulia Gwinn’s Germany finished second in the UEFA Women’s Nations League after defeat in Spain, while there were good wins for Momoko Tanikawa’s Japan and Jovana Damnjanović’s Serbia, plus a hat-trick for Georgia Stanway in action for England. fcbayern.com rounds up the November women’s international break.
Germany were the better side for large parts of the first leg of their Nations League final against Spain but unable to get a goal in front of a crowd of 40,000 in Kaiserslautern. Gwinn, Klara Bühl, Franziska Kett, Alara, Ena Mahmutovic and Linda Dallmann were all involved for Germany, while Edna Imade, who joined Bayern in the summer and is currently on loan at Real Sociedad, made her senior Spain debut in the goalless encounter.
The second leg in Madrid also produced no goals in the first half, but Spain took their opportunities in the second, scoring three times in the space of 13 minutes thanks to a brace from Claudia Pina either side of a Victoria Lopez goal to win 3-0 and lift the Nations League title.
Stanway enjoyed an excellent display for England in their 8-0 friendly win over China at Wembley. The Bayern midfielder first set up Lauren Hemp for 3-0 after 16 minutes before getting her first goal midway through the first half. The 26-year-old then made it 5-0 with a penalty before the break and completed her hat-trick shortly after the restart. Stanway didn’t feature in the Lioness’ second friendly as Sarina Wiegman’s team beat Ghana 2-0.
Damnjanović was the hero for Serbia in their friendly against the Czech Republic, scoring the only goal of the game in the 17th minute. The 31-year-old also started their second match against the Czechs, which Serbia again won 2-1.
Tanikawa and Japan had a double-header against a Canada side featuring Vanessa Gilles, with the former prevailing both times. The Bayern midfielder both scored and assisted in the first 3-0 win. The 20-year-old also played in the subsequent 1-0 victory. Gilles featured in both for Canada.
Barbara Dunst played her first international game since her cruciate ligament injury as she came on in the 63rd minute for Bayern teammate Maria Plattner in Austria’s friendly against Finland, coming from 1-0 down to draw 1-1. Plattner, Dunst and Kathi Naschenweng all started the following game against Ukraine but lost 3-2.
Tuva Hansen’s Norway claimed a famous 3-1 win over Brazil, with the Bayern defender setting up Signe Gaupset for the opener. They then faced Denmark and Stine Ballisager in their second game, which ended goalless.
Arianna Caruso’s Italy went to the USA and were beaten 3-0 and 2-0 by their hosts. The Bayern midfielder started both games.
Mala Grohs was with Germany’s U23s for two games. She didn’t feature in the 3-1 loss to Portugal but started the 2-0 win over France.
Natalia Padilla Bidas was called up by Poland but didn’t feature in either the 1-0 win over Slovenia or the 3-0 victory against Latvia.
